Six Feature Winners Thrill Path Valley Opener Spring Run PA _ Six feature winners kicked off the Path Valley Speedway Park season opener with a fast and smooth program Friday night, March 28. Feature winners on opening day were Ben Murphy in 600 Sprints, Dave Leidy in Mini Stocks, Mike Freet in 305 Sprints, Ryan Greth in Sidewinders, Mike Rutherford in 270 Sprints, and defending champion John Rasp in Four-Cylinder Thunder Cars. "The drivers remembered how to race, and the veteran track crew made everything go smoothly," said Race Director John Winsett of the program that concluded by 11 p.m. Next Friday night, April 4, the Late Models and Legends take the place of the Sidewinders and 305 Sprints. Mike Wagner took the 305 Sprint lead on the first lap and stayed just ahead of Mike Heckman through the first 14 laps. Diving into turn two on lap 15, Heckman unexpectedly overtook Wagner and climbed his rear wheels, spinning both sprints into the infield. On the restart Mike Freet took over the lead from the third place he had raced all night and lead all the way to the finish. The front five were Freet, Mark Watkins, Craig Laudermilch, Todd Spangler, and Jason Brandt and the heat winner was Heckman. John Rasp passed Denny Scofield for the Thunder Car lead on the first lap diving inside on turn two. Ken Lawrence Jr. caught up to Rasp on lap eleven and actually passed for the lead on lap 14 but Rasp came right back to take over again and hold on all the way to the checkers as the race ran without a caution to slow the action. The front five finishers were Rasp, Lawrence, Scofield, Chris Derr and Harold Smith and the heat winners were Rasp and Scofield. Mike Rutherford passed Tom Tice for the 270 Sprint lead on lap two and held just ahead of a hard charging Sean McAndrews until the final lap when McAndrews brought out the only caution. The front five were then Ruther ford, Steve Whary, Tom Tice, Levi Peck, and Adam Warner. Whary and McAndrews won the heats. In the Sidewinders Ryan Greth passed Rich Hench for the lead on lap 10 and then held off Donnie Hendershot to win by half the track. The front five were Greth, Hendershot, Chad Hough, Jason Morrison and Sean Campbell and the heat winners were Morrison and Greth. Dave Leidy went from fourth to second on lap two and took over the lead n the Mini Stocks on lap 6. In another feature with no restarts, Leidy finished a turn ahead of Gary Dehart and then in the front five Kyle Wiser, Mike Hawbaker and Gary Newell. Leidy won the single heat race. In 600 Sprints Ben Murphy charged out of tenth place start to take the lead from Tm Glatfelter after a lap four caution. From there to the finish through six more cautions and restarts Murphy lead to the checkers followed in the front five by Glatfelter, Tom Kohler, Mike Dicely and Tyler Walton. Walton, Barrick and Kohler won the heat races. The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. From March to October, Path Valley races stock cars and sprints Friday nights and AMA bikes or Strictly Stock junkyard cars Saturday nights. The phone number at the track is 717-349-7111.
